"If you ignore the star shine, then the star shine fades away . . . " While it's the last line of the last song on Evelyn Hope's self-titled EP, the sentiment really ought to be the opening phrase. Evelyn Hope is star shine not to be ignored. Not that they are likely to fade away anytime soon. What Evelyn Hope hopes to convey is a sound that is unique to listeners. They offset this self-assurance with a sense of razor-sharp humor. "I think for the most part when someone joins his/her first band your naivety makes you really cocky and you automatically want to rule the world. But now I think that first on our to-do list would be: to contribute something decent to music and art. Fame and fortune are still at a close second place though."

Whereas fortune is concerned, Evelyn Hope's sound carries a wealth of influences. "Naturally our sound comes from an infusion of the different music we listen. And it's not even an actual attempt at combining these styles. I think it just happens naturally. When you listen to music you are not only enjoying yourself but you are subliminally learning." From classic rock such as Led Zeppelin, Yes, Nick Drake, and The Beatles, to the indie-pop tendencies of Elliot Smith, Spoon, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jeff Buckley, and Sigur Ros, Evelyn Hope weaves the intricate fabric of their music in a manner that is consistent with someone that aspires toward quality and talent.

Their decisive measures to compose engaging, accessible, yet complex music is a rewarding effort both for them, as well as for the listener. "As of
late we are really finding our niche as far as writing together as a band and just the style of music that we want to playing." Spine-tingling vocal harmonies blend smoothly with layered, semi-orchestral arrangements. Each segment of each song carries new flavors, new emotions, and structured beauty, juxtaposed against occasional displays of intensity.

The band's first EP showcases their muscle in a completely self-produced effort. Chris Mizzone discusses the advantage of recording their own album. "The fact that we record in our own studio and are not restrained by time and money is extremely beneficial. The recording process really exposes you to your strengths and weaknesses as a musician." Spurring them on to achieving their ideals is the notion that most music is terribly bland, and uninspired, and that their goal and motto must be to surpass the mediocre and trite music that is riding the airwaves. "Popular radio music lacks integrity and soul. There are some great bands doing great things as we speak and not getting the proper credit for it." Evelyn Hope has been backing up their recording with live gigs, building a fanbase particularly in their native New Jersey area, and extending their tours out as far as Illinois and Baltimore. "People have been receptive." While it's not accurately or remotely indicative of their true fans, Chris quips that their "best compliments come from leftover 70's-burnout types."

While they claim to be "playing it by ear," it is obvious that Evelyn Hope takes their work seriously. This is a band with the vision and potential to take things to another level. "The music we write is honest according to what we want to be playing and what is inside of us. There are no reservations or limits whatsoever."
