DION ROY Dion Roy is a NYC Indie singer-songwriter who is known for fusing his electro-acoustic roots with his knack for writing an unforgettable hook.
Born in Namibia, raised in South Africa and New Jersey, and now a true New Yorker at heart, Dion has lived and breathed the downtown Lower East Side music landscape for the past nine years. Playing as a bassist in several bands over the years, Dion has graced the stage at all of the usual NYC suspects, including The Bitter End, the late Luna Lounge, Pianos and Kenny’s Castaways. He also opened for high-profile acts like The Donnas, Bleu, and Ben Kweller while touring the North-Eastern College circuit.
In the last few years, this introspective and enigmatic musician has moved on from group bassist to solo vocalist and songwriter and released his debut CD, titled “Gallery,” in June 2009. While Dion’s songs draw upon personal experiences - he calls the album “very personal” - they also speak to a greater audience about conflicting perspectives and desires. The ten-track album features songs whose themes include a wide range of topics from addictive love (“Come Back Around”) and failed relationships (“Wants It”) to the betrayal brought on by a loved one’s substance abuse (“Orchid”) and the useless carnage of war (“Blind World”). The common thread throughout these diverse songs is Dion's fresh combination of catchy pop hooks with brooding, raw emotionality.
“Gallery” garnered several positive reviews - WDHA 105.5 DJ Lindsay Klein gushes that Roy has “raw and natural talent…with amazing energy pouring into his lyrics and music.” Ed Jupp, music blogger at 17 Seconds, calls Dion Roy’s debut “…something special, routed in its’ wonderful simplicity… A man who could make us believe in the notion of the singer-songwriter again!”
His blend of genres has drawn comparisons to other singer/songwriters like Ryan Adams, Pete Yorn, and Damien Rice, and electronic bands such as Keane, Postal Service, and Snow Patrol. But what distinguishes this young artist is his genuine lack of pretense and his guarded nature. He almost never reveals the stories behind his songs, encouraging his fans to find their own connection to the words.
2009 marked several milestones for Dion. This year, he toured California, had several television and radio interviews with ABC Baltimore (WMAR-TV), PlumTV, and more. In addition, his music was used in many national ad campaigns (most recently featured in a Huggies Pull-Ups commercial), as well as movies and TV shows, all on top of a busy tour schedule along the Northeast.
"Gallery" is available to purchase on Amazon and iTunes. Dion's sophomore album is currently in the works and is slated for an early 2010 release. For tour dates and other information, visit his official site at www.DionRoy.com. |
